About New England Sound Therapy·
Paul began his study of the drum over thirty years ago and has worked with masters of African, Japanese, south Asian, and Middle-Eastern drumming. He is a member of the drum performance troupe Bese Saka and the Kirtan band Bhakti Bliss. He is a trained Remo HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming facilitator, and a member of the council that organizes the annual Eastern MA Rhythm Festival. He started working with the Sound Attunement Therapy system over three years ago, studying directly with its founder, Toby Christensen.
Toby founded the 5-Element Sound Attunement Therapy system almost 20 years ago. It is a modern system of wellness that is rooted deep in the traditions and beliefs of the Dagara people of West Africa. At its core are rhythms embodying each of the five elements of Fire, Water, Earth, Mineral and Nature, that developed over years of study with Elder Malidoma Somé of the Dagara tribe in Burkina Faso. This core is complemented with spiritual tools from Native American, European and Indian traditions, Toby also having worked extensively with Lakota Chief Phil Crazy Bull, and others. The efficacy of the Sound Attunement Therapy system over time has earned Toby the nickname “the Healing Drummer”.
Paul’s work with Toby has also encompassed the rituals and cosmology of the Dagara people, especially the system of divination known as Cowrie Shell Divination, which Toby himself learned under Dagara Elder Malidoma Somé. Paul has studied core Shamanism with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, and various aspects of Shamanism with Sandra Ingerman and others. He is currently a student in the Mystery School of the Temple of Witchcraft.
